Virtual fishing to get reel in Japan

Good news for busy, urban anglers: rod Japanese toymaker Tomy will release an augmented reality fishing rod allowing users to feel a bite and reel in a heavy fish regardless of their location.

Japanese toymaker Tomy unveils a new fishing simulation game "Virtual Masters Real" which shakes the rod and emits a sound from the reel mimicking the drag when a fish bites at a toy exhibition in Tokyo on January 25, 2011. Tomy will put it on the market in July.

"Virtual Masters Real" -- a palm-sized rod with an antenna-like tip equipped with a reeling handle and small screen -- will go on sale in Japan in July for 6,279 yen ($76), Tomy said on Tuesday.

The rod's camera uses special technology to augment any location shown on the screen with "fishing opportunities", potentially giving offices, streets and shopping malls the refined air of a relaxing day by the lakeside.

Or, depending on the size of the fish, users could find themselves haunted by a virtual obsession to rival Captain Ahab's pursuit of Moby Dick.

A whirring sound accompanies the simulated casting of the line, as well as a satisfying "plunk" when the sinker hits the water, the company said.

The harder the user casts out, the further the line flies on the screen. A bite on the line is conveyed by a vibrating reel with the "weight" on the line changing in accordance with the size of the fish, it said.

If the fish is successfully hooked, the reel will shake as users work to reel in the virtual beast. The line will go limp if the fish is allowed to escape.

Tomy has set a sales target of 300,000 units for the first year of sales as it looks to cash in on the rising popularity of outdoor leisure activities, including fishing, in Japan, the company said.

Six police wounded in Narathiwat

Six policemen received minor wounds when a bomb exploded on a road in Muang district of Narathiwat province on Tuesday morning.

The 15kg home-made bomb buried on a road leading to Ban Chut School in tambon Manang Tayo was detonated by insurgents as a police pick-up truck with six policemen on board were taking a number of teachers to the school.

After the explosion, there was a brief exchange of gunfire with the attackers. All six policemen received slight wounds in the incident, but the teachers were not hurt.

The police vehicle was heavily damaged.

Motorola keen on Thai smartphone market

US-based Motorola has vowed to earn a strong share in the Android-based smartphone market in Thailand by setting up a local authorised distributor.

After suspending its conventional phone business for a couple of years, Motorola resumed its marketing activities with the release of its business plan yesterday.

Motorola has spun off two entities: Motorola Mobility covering mobile phone devices and home products, and Motorola Solutions for enterprise networks.

"Thailand is the biggest market for Android-based smartphones in Southeast Asia," said Robert van Tilburg, senior sales director of Motorola Mobility in Southeast Asia.

It set up a local authorised distributor, Qool Distribution, a subsidiary of SIS Distribution Plc, to strengthen Motorola's distribution channels. The company also appointed LoxBit as its authorised service centre.

Mr van Tilburg said most of Motorola's revenue in Thailand is expected to come from Android smartphone products.

Somchai Sitichaisrichart, managing director of SIS distribution, said Motorola is introducing two Android phone models at the Thailand Mobile Expo: the Motorola Defy equipped with a 3.7-inch touch-screen display, priced at 12,900 baht, and the Motorola Charm with keyboard priced at 9,900 baht.

It plans to co-market a bundled data package with mobile operators.

Loxbit has three drop points in Bangkok for service support.

Mr Somchai said Android smartphones are expected to control 50% of the Thai market by 2012 in line with global growth rates.

There are about 1.5 million smartphones in the local market, with Apple, BlackBerry and Android all with similar market share.

SIS is considering introducing the premium Motorola Atrix phone and Motorola Xoom tablet in the Thai market this year. SIS is a distributor for HTC, Acer and BlackBerry.

ICT to talk with concession holders


The government has ordered the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to negotiate with mobile-phone operators within 15 days about the telecom concessions amendments issue.

This move followed the Supreme Court’s ruling on Jan 28 that changes made to concessions between three private telecom companies and their concession owners, TOT Plc and CAT Telecom were illegal.

The three companies are AIS, DTAC and True Move. Concessions of these companies were changed several times under different conditions and for different purposes. The concessions of each operator run out at different times: True Move in 2013, AIS in 2015 and DTAC in 2018

The ICT was confident it would be able encourage the respective mobile-phone operators to comply with the court’s ruling within the given period, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said today after the cabinet 's weekly meeting.

If the negotiations between the ICT and the companies failed, the government would then decide what type of legal action it would pursue against the companies, said Mr Abhisit.

Army: Talks the way to end border row


Army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha insisted on Tuesday that the best way to settle the border dispute with Cambodia is by formal talks.

It is most important the problem is resolved by negotiation through the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), Gen Prayuth said.

The Foreign Ministry was trying to arrange a new meeting of the JBC to discuss the matter.

The situation along the border remained normal today, and the 2nd Army was well prepared to ensure peace and order in the border area, he said.

The Cambodians had similar security measures along the border, but that did not mean the two sides were on the verge of clashing with each other, said Gen Prayuth.

“The use of force will be the last means we will turn to.

"It’s now the government’s duty to try to end the problem through talks,’’ he said, reiterating that Thailand had not lost any territorial sovereignty to Cambodia.

Infinitive

Definition: Infinitive is the base form of the verb.

The infinitive form of

verb is the form which follows "to".

For example:

Infinitives without "to" are known as

OTHER FORMS

Tips for English Classroom participation

Some school prefer to grade based on classroom

participation, others based on final exams. Which do

you prefer and why?

I wrote this in an IBT mini test, in 30 mints, I got about 5 or 6 words wrong. Can anyone give me an idea about the score I may get for an essay like this?

Every country uses different kinds of grading system, each one seems to fulfill the requirement that the student needs in order to move to the next level. Sometimes is best to be graded on exams rather than participation, but this can often change depending on what is been evaluated. In my opinion both options should be a part of the grading system. This way it gives the students the advantage of gaining knowledge through text books, but also through participation in the classroom, for example answering and asking questions.

The students need to have a complete understanding of the subject as a whole, this way they can be prepared for an exam. In some cases, students are able to participate in the classroom, ask questions and answer them, but when given an exam they do not respond well to the questions that are being asked. Therefore, is it best to be graded based on both, participation and final exams. Final exams are the main factor that tells the professor that the student has studied, and that he/she is well prepared for this test. Furthermore, that they have the knowledge they need to move on to the next level.

The subject that is being taught plays an important role when it comes to grading the students. For instance, if the subject is psychology which is mostly based on theory rather than practice, the student should have a general knowledge of the important steps to take in order to help a client or patient. Therefore, it is a good idea for the student to be able to participate in the classroom discussion, but also be tasted at the end of the course, so that the student can demonstrate his/her full understanding of this subject

In conclusion, there are many ways in which professors grade their students, some are based on assignments, other on test throughout the school year, and other through participation and final exams. Regardless of the way that the teacher chooses to test the students, the important fact to remember is that, the students need to be well prepared, and should have a good theoretical understanding, as well as practice in a real setting. So that he/ she can utilize the lessons learned throughout their career, in a manner that is as ethical and as professional as possible. The best type of grading I prefer is based on both participation in the classroom, in addition to final exams. Of course, that being tested on participation only sounds like the easiest way for the student, however, to some extent it is acceptable, but just one type of testing do not completely demonstrates that the students are prepared enough to work as professional in which the lives of many innocent people are at risk. A doctor for example, need to have practice, in order to learn, so they should be tested in a different way. Depending on the profession that the students are studying, is how they should be tested.

The study of proper principle of translation is termed as translation theory. This theory, based on a solid foundation on understanding of how languages work, translation theory recognizes that different languages encode meaning in differing forms, yet guides translators to find appropriate ways of preserving meaning, while using the most appropriate forms of each language. Translation theory includes principles for translating figurative language, dealing with lexical mismatches, rhetorical questions, inclusion of cohesion markers, and many other topics crucial to good translation.

Basically there are two competing theories of translation. In one, the predominant purpose is to express as exactly as possible the full force and meaning of every word and turn of phrase in the original, and in the other the predominant purpose is to produce a result that does not read like a translation at all, but rather moves in its new dress with the same ease as in its native rendering. In the hands of a good translator neither of these two approaches can ever be entirely ignored.

Conventionally, it is suggested that in order to perform their job successfully, translators should meet three important requirements; they should be familiar with:

  • the source language
  • the target language
  • the subject matter

Based on this premise, the translator discovers the meaning behind the forms in the source language and does his best to produce the same meaning in the target language - using the forms and structures of the target language. Consequently, what is supposed to change is the form and the code and what should remain unchanged is the meaning and the message. (Larson, 1984)

One of the earliest attempts to establish a set of major rules or principles to be referred to in literary translation was made by French translator and humanist Étienne Dolet, who in 1540 formulated the following fundamental principles of translation ("La Manière de Bien Traduire d’une Langue en Aultre"), usually regarded as providing rules of thumb for the practicing translator:

The translator should understand perfectly the content and intention of the author whom he is translating. The principal way to reach it is reading all the sentences or the text completely so that you can give the idea that you want to say in the target language because the most important characteristic of this technique is translating the message as clearly and natural as possible. If the translation is for different countries besides Mexico, the translator should use the cultural words of that country. For example if he/she has to translate ”She is unloyal with her husband” in this country it can be translated as “Ella le pone los cuernos” but in Peru it can be translated as “Ella le pone los cachos”. In this case it is really important the cultural words because if the translator does not use them correctly the translation will be misunderstood.

The translator should have a perfect knowledge of the language from which he is translating and an equally excellent knowledge of the language into which he is translating. At this point the translator must have a wide knowledge in both languages for getting the equivalence in the target language, because the deficiency of the knowledge of both languages will result in a translation without logic and sense. For example if you translate the following sentence “Are you interested in sports?” as “¿Estás interesado en deportes?” the translation is wrong since the idea of this question in English is “¿Practicas algún deporte?”

The translator should avoid the tendency to translate word by word, because doing so is to destroy the meaning of the original and to ruin the beauty of the expression. This point is very important and one of which if it is translated literally it can transmit another meaning or understanding in the translation.

For example in the sentence.- “In this war we have to do or die”, if we translate literally “En esta guerra tenemos que hacer o morir” the message is unclear. The idea is, (.) “En esta guerra tenemos que vencer o morir.”

The translator should employ the forms of speech in common usage. The translator should bear in mind the people to whom the translation will be addressed and use words that can be easily understood. Example. “They use a sling to lift the pipes” if the translation is to be read by specialists we would translate it “Utilizan una eslinga para levantar la tubería”. If the text is to be read by people who are not specialists we would rather translate it “Utilizan una cadena de suspension para levantar los tubos”.
